At least two production models, c/n L 1046 (260th production model)
and L-1047 (261st production model), were already set aside for the EADF in
early 1939. According to the Imperial War Museum in London, either L-1046 or
L-1047, was flown in the UK in a demonstration flight having the Estonian colors
on its tail as well as carrying wing and fuselage roundels in the Estonian colors
of cornflower blue-black-white as depicted above. Apparently, the British
officials at the Supermarine works were not focused on the fact that Estonia did
not use roundels - it used a triangle. Photographic proof of this is still
outstanding.
In September of 1939, London cancelled its sales contract with
Estonia, citing the impending need to place all available military aircraft at the
disposal of the RAF to fight the new war in Europe and the fact that Estonia had
signed a non-aggression pact with Germany. Estonia's L-1046 and L-1047
Spitfires were both seized and reassigned to the RAF's No. 603 Squadron,
based in Turnhouse (14 October 1939 - December 1939), then Prestwick
(December 1939 - January 1940), then Dyce (January 1939 - August 1940).
